Shift Clean Energy ESS

Shfit Clean Energy products are specifically engineered to meet the needs of the Commercial Industrial Marine sector, with risk managed and designed to ensure 100% uptime based on the scalable structure of the Energy Storage System (ESS). The larger the ESS the harder it is to take out of service due to the number of battery banks that would need to fail simultaneously to prevent the ESS to be able to perform its duty.

 

CAPEX and OPEX

  • Shift 3MWh ESS system installed into a new-build Superyacht is approximately 3 MUSD.

  • Shift ESS is modular and scalable, once the initial system is installed additional modules can be added to the system to increase the overall ESS capacity. Capital C does its technical analysis and design based on adding additional 1.5MWh increments to the initial 3MWh system. Each additional 1.5MWh system is approximately 1.5 MUSD.

  • Shift have developed CellSwap™, a system that greatly reduces the OPEX of the ESS system. The cells in the core of the battery can be replaced when nearing end of life. Other items, such as electronics and racking, are reused. There is no need for costly refit of existing hardware, only the consumable parts such as the cells are replaced.  This delivers an effective service life of 30 years.

  • Utilizing a Shift ESS system at scale presents the operator with the opportunity to run all generators and engines at peak output when required and for the ESS to manage all dynamic loads, extending the service life of the fuel driven machinery and reducing the overall environmental impact significantly. The reduced running hours on main engines and thus reduces expensive and time consuming overalls.

 

Safety

  • Shift batteries are fire-proof (A60), and contain their own internal fire detection and fire-fighting system.

  • Shift battery modules are built to IP67 rating, including PC board enclosures.

  • Shift battery systems are designed to operate in 8G/5Axis environments. They are validated as a system to 30G impact rating, whilst individual modules are tested to 65G impact rating.

  • Shift is only battery system in the world that can demonstrate it will survive an A60 environment for at least 75mins; that is 950°C for 75mins without the lithium contributing to a fire.

  • Shift is the only system currently available that monitors both temperature and voltage at every single cell in the system, thus providing a unique real time knowledge of batteries at all times, to cell level.

  • Shift ESS manages the charge and discharge of every single cell in the system.

  • Shift batteries are fitted with two contactors in each module, isolating the terminals and the system to a maximum of 100VDC risk.

  • Shift batteries have no voltage present unless the system has checked itself and is ready to operate.

  • Shift has a patented built-in gas extraction system that offers the unique isolation of any battery gas produced from the battery space.

  • Shift battery system utilizes a patented liquid cooling system that ensures that an internal operating temperature of 25C is constant, regardless of the ambient temperature.

  • Shift systems require no HVAC.

  • Shift has a unique cell compression that is a major contributor to safety and reduced aging.

  • Shift batteries achieve the lowest reduction in SOH per year at 0.4% compared to other manufacturers systems that have an SOH reduction of between 2 - 4%.

  • Shift batteries cycle life at 80% DOD is 15,000cycles, is twice as long as many other manufacturers systems.

 

Certification

  • Shift battery systems are type approved under following classification bodies:

    • DNV

    • ABS

    • Lloyds Register

    • BV

    • IRC

 

Manufacturing

  • Shift currently manufactures it battery systems in Güstrow, Germany. BOM is majority EU based.

  • Shift are currently developing a UK based manufacturing facility, anticipated first deliveries from UK plant is Q3 2022.

 

Shift has developed a proprietary BMS/EMS software and everything is managed and monitored starting at cell level.

The BMS/EMS software creates easy to read and validate data that is usable by all parties to manage the systems.

The Shift asset management software is built from this and incorporates all data needed by Owners and finance partners. The system also calculates and exports data to outside governmental bodies such as Flag state authorities and the IMO for monitoring emissions and emissions reductions.

100m x 14m Explorer Superyacht: LR Class Ice 1B Polar Code 6

Fitted with Rolls Royce Engines, Kongsberg Propulsion and Kongsberg Bridge System

 

12MWh of ESS capability would greatly reduce fuel consumption by at least 50%, reduce SOx and NOx by up to 80% and reduce GHG by 50 – 70%. At anchor the yacht will have the ability to operate on ESS power for 24hours before generators are needed to be turned on to recharge the ESS. Furthermore with an ESS of 12MWh the yacht will have the ability to enter port under full electric power and then have the ability to connect to the ports onshore grid supply via its shore power connections thus ensuring complete zero emissions whilst in port and then depart under full electric power.

 

80m x 13m Superyacht: LR Class

Fitted with Rolls Royce Engines, Kongsberg Propulsion and Kongsberg Bridge System

 

6MWh of ESS capability would greatly reduce fuel consumption by at least 35%, reduce SOx and NOx by up to 75% and reduce GHG by 45 – 70%. At anchor the yacht will have the ability to operate on ESS power for 18hours before generators are needed to be turned on to recharge the ESS. Furthermore with an ESS of 6MWh the yacht will have the ability to enter port under full electric power and then have the ability to connect to the ports onshore grid supply via its shore power connections thus ensuring complete zero emissions whilst in port and then depart under full electric power.

 

The installation of large capacity ESS greatly reduces the reliance on fossil fuels and thus reducing carbon emissions and the carbon footprint of the Superyacht. The use of an ESS coupled with a future proof design allows for the complete removal of the fossil fuel based system once at scale alternate fuel systems and sources are further developed and available for marine use; inclusive of adding more ESS capacity. These 2 Superyachts once built will be compliant to IMO 2030 and future proofed to IMO 2050, based on the large ESS capacity and the other various energy saving and recovery features integrated into their design.

 

200m x 35m: FDV ST269 Construction Vessels DNV Class - DP3, Ice Class 1C, Polar C

Fitted with Rolls Royce Engines, Kongsberg Propulsion and Kongsberg Bridge System

 

The FDV ST269 series of vessels when completed will have the largest ESS installed on any vessels in the world with a total installed capacity of 20MWh installed in two standalone ESS rooms. This system is specifically designed around the various energy recovery system fitted to the ST269 and is used for peak shavings and capturing free energy from the NOV PowerBlade™. The PowerBlade™ recovers energy whenever loads are deployed with the cranes or cable is laid from the carousels. Therefore given these advanced energy recovery features and operational profile; and although the ST269 is a 200m x 35m vessel she has greatly reduced fuel consumption of at least 50%, reduced SOx and NOx by up to 80% and reduced GHG by 45 – 70%. The ST269 can enter port under full electric power and then connect to the ports onshore grid supply via its shore power connections thus ensuring complete zero emissions whilst in port and then depart under full electric power. Additionally the ST269’s shore connections are also capable of executing a reverse supply; the vessel can put its stored energy from its ESS into the shore power grid.
